Election Results: You Win!

“…knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.”
- 1 Thessalonians 1:4

“This is the most important election of your lifetime!”

This is a common refrain heard about every two years in the United States. And it simply is not true, if you are looking at local, state or national politics. Don’t get me wrong, it is vital that we vote our conscience. We are a nation of the people, by the people and for the people. But there is a more important election.

Paul says in Romans 13:1, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities.” After adopting the Constitution of the United States, Benjamin Franklin was exiting Independence Hall, Elizabeth Willing Powel asked him, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin responded with, “A republic, if you can keep it.” Therefore, it is incumbent on us as citizens of the republic to keep it. We do so one vote at a time.

It can get daunting in the lead up to the election with all the negative ads. I’m reminded of the very first political cartoon I remember as a child. I don’t even remember which comic strip it came from, but it showed two men sitting in recliners watching TV. The TV announces, “And now for your election results.” One of the men covers his eyes and proclaims, “I can’t watch! I just know one of them is going to win!”

Elections can be scary at times. We get caught up thinking whatever happens is going to change everything. Yet, the world keeps on keeping on. Don’t get me wrong, elections matter and are important. However, I think we often forget the most important election of our life is not decide at the polls.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-4 shares Paul’s prayer for Christians, “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing you work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.”

One vote. You win!

There is no election on earth that can change your election in Christ! There is no government that can take away who He called you to be. There is no state in which your election in Him is not sure and irrevocable. You win. You are His. You are to walk in the authority granted by Him, for we are “ambassadors for Christ.” (2 Corinthians 5:20)

Elections matter. We should be subject to the governing authorities and vote as we are led. Yet, there is no election that can change who you are in Christ, or what He desires to work through your life.

Do not face these days in fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Stand sure in your election as a Child of God! Vote and stand firm! Whatever comes, it is no surprise to God. Nor does any result change who we were called to be!

Our election was decided by a single vote: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you of of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

No election in the world can change your eternal election in Christ! We are not called to change the world. We are simply called to be who He created us to be in the world. So, let’s go be who He called us to be.
